A.R.T. Treatment Defined

Active Release Techniques treatment is a hands-on touch and case-management system that allows a practitioner to diagnose and treat soft-tissue injuries. Soft tissue refers primarily to muscle, tendon, fascia, and nerves. Specific injuries that apply are repetitive strains, adhesions, tissue hyposia, and joint disfunction.

Soft-Tissue Treatment and Management

Professional education for the treatment of muscle, tendon, fascia, and nerves has been generally neglected. Soft-tissue care usually meant drugs, heat, cold, rest and massage. Little progress was made toward identifying the relationships of moving tissues to one another.

There are many people who claim to practice the Active Release Technique. However the only people who are legally allowed to say that they do are people who have undergone rigorous testing with Dr. Mike Leahy. To be credentialed requires a 4 day workshop with a written and practical examination requiring 90% proficiency in upper extremity. There are A.R.T. seminars, upper extremity, lower extremity and spine, covering 300 muscle protocols and 100 peripheral nerve entrapment protocols. Dr. Bonsall has been a practitioner of A.R.T. since 1993 and is a member of the College of A.R.T. Providers. In order to remain a credentialed A.R.T. provider, requires yearly recredentialing with hands-on evaluation by Dr. Mike Leahy. Before going to anyone who claims to be an A.R.T. provider, it's recommended that you call Dr. Mike Leahy in Colorado Springs to make sure that they are currently a credentialed provider at 719.473.7000.

More than 12 years ago, first as a college athlete and then as a chiropractic student, Dr. Mike Leahy recognized the microscopic and macroscopic properties of muscle and how these properties responded to injury. With his own hands, Dr. Leahy noticed that these areas responded positively to certain types of pressing, stripping, and manipulating.
